Frequently asked questions

What are dock bumpers?

Dock bumpers cushion contact between a boat and the dock to help protect both from scrapes and impact. Our collection includes vinyl rub rail for straight dock edges and separate corner bumpers for exposed corners.

Are dock rub rail, dock edging and dock bumpers the same thing?

They overlap, but they do not always mean the same product. Dock edging and rub rail usually mean the long strips fitted along a dock's edge. Dock bumpers is a broader term that also includes corner protection. Our straight rub rail comes in 10-foot lengths; corner bumpers are separate pieces.

Where should I place dock bumpers for boats?

Cover the edges and corners the boat can touch as it approaches, leaves or rests alongside the dock. Check the hull's contact height and allow for changes in water level. A bumper placed above or below the contact area will leave that area exposed.

How do I choose a rub rail profile?

Styles 01 and 02 have a top lip that wraps over the dock edge. Style 08 has a flat mounting back that fits against the dock's side. Compare each profile drawing with the edge you want to cover. For a replacement, match the existing cross-section as well as the color.

How do I install dock bumpers and rub rail?

Fasten the rub rail along the dock edge with rubrail screws or ring nails suited to the mounting surface. We recommend 30 screws or nails per 10-foot rail. Our stainless Rubrail Screws and Rubrail Ring Nails come in 30-count bags. Fasteners for both rub rail and corner bumpers are sold separately.

What is the difference between dock bumpers and boat fenders?

Dock bumpers attach to the dock. Boat fenders usually hang from the boat and can be moved to suit where it is moored. The rub rail and corner bumpers in this collection are dock-mounted protection.

How should I maintain dock bumpers?

Rinse away dirt and debris, check for loose fasteners and inspect the rub rail and corners for damage. Tighten hardware where needed. Replace damaged vinyl rub rail so the dock edge has a sound protective surface.

Compare the profiles, measure your dock and order the rail, corners and fasteners for the job. Need help matching an existing section? Call 800-223-3444.
