Frequently asked questions

How many dock floats do I need?

Divide the dock's required flotation by the buoyancy rating of your chosen float, then round up. Our guide starts at about 30 pounds of flotation per square foot for a wood-framed dock with wood decking used by a few people. Under that example, an 8-by-20-foot dock has a 4,800-pound target. Float placement and the deck's height above the water still need to suit the design.

What are the best dock floats for my project?

For a general dock, our flotation guide favors 12- or 16-inch-deep floats for stability. Choose a model with enough buoyancy for your dock's construction and intended use, then check that its footprint and mounting style fit the frame. The final selection also affects how high the dock sits above the water.

Are dock float drums the same as complete floating dock sections?

No. A float drum supplies buoyancy beneath the dock. A complete floating dock section also includes a frame and decking. The float drums in this collection are individual components for building or repairing a dock. We also offer complete dock systems if you need more than the floats.

How do I attach dock floats to the frame?

Attach Standard Eagle Floats through their molded-in mounting slots. We list F-CB383FB carriage bolts for steel truss or steel channel docks and F-LB4HFB lag bolts for wood docks. Muscle Flange models attach with lag screws through the flange. Use the attachment method listed for the float and frame you choose.

What affects the cost of dock floats?

The float's size and model determine its price. Select the dimensions on the product page to see the price for that option. Attachment hardware and shipping also affect the order total. For large or mixed orders, contact us for a more precise shipping quote.

What is the difference between foam-filled and hollow dock floats?

Foam-filled floats have a foam core inside their outer shell; hollow floats hold air without a foam core. Our Eagle Floats contain closed-cell expanded polystyrene, or EPS, inside a polyethylene shell. This collection's float drums are foam-filled.

When should I replace dock floats?

Replace a damaged float if it can no longer provide the buoyancy or secure mounting your dock needs. Check float bodies, mounting points and fasteners during routine dock inspections. If the dock starts leaning or sitting lower, have the floats and structure checked before ordering replacements. Match the replacement's size, mounting style and buoyancy to the dock plan.
