Frequently asked questions

What hardware do I need to build a floating dock?

You need hardware to reinforce the frame, join any dock sections and connect the dock to its anchoring system. For a wood dock, that typically means corner brackets, male and female connectors, pins and mounting bolts. Use the parts list for your dock design to set quantities. Floats, framing and decking are separate components.

How do I choose dock hinges and floating dock connectors?

Choose connectors made for your frame and the movement your dock design allows. Our Steel Truss Hinge Connector Plates let adjoining sections pivot using male and female plates and an F-PIN34 connector pin. The pin is sold separately. When replacing an existing connection, match the plate dimensions, bolt-hole spacing and mating parts.

Is a floating dock hardware kit the same as buying individual parts?

No. A dock hardware kit groups components for a dock build, while individual parts are ordered separately. We offer both. Our DIY hardware kits let you buy lumber locally and build your own dock. Many brackets, connector plates, pins and fasteners in this collection are sold individually for repairs, replacements or additions.

How do I choose between standard and heavy-duty dock hardware?

Choose Standard wood dock hardware for moderately rough water and medium-size boats. Choose Heavy-Duty for commercial use, rougher water or larger boats. Both use 1/4-inch-thick, 5-inch-wide steel and 1/2-inch carriage bolts. Heavy-Duty adds connecting tabs: two on the male corner and three on the female corner, compared with one and two on Standard hardware.

Can I use stainless steel bolts with galvanized dock hardware?

Yes, where the product specifies them. Our Wood Dock Light Duty Pile Hoops are made from galvanized steel pipe and use included stainless steel fasteners to join the hoop to its T bracket. For other hardware, use the fastener material, size and type specified for that component.

Can I replace just one bracket or connector?

Yes. Many of our dock brackets and connectors are sold individually, so you can buy a replacement part. Match its dimensions and hole spacing to the existing connection. Inspect the matching plate, pin, bolts and frame as well, since damage may extend beyond the part you first noticed.

Can you make custom dock hardware?

Yes. American Muscle Docks fabricates custom dock hardware. Send a drawing, CAD file or a description of the connection you need. Include the key dimensions and how the part will be used so the team can review the job.
